B1 marks the threshold of independence. The Goethe-Institut considers this the level where you can deal with most situations while traveling in German-speaking countries, describe experiences and events, and give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. This is the most vocabulary-dense level.

Study tips

At B1, context matters more than isolated words. Read the example sentences carefully — they show how words function in real situations. Group words by topic (work, health, politics) and practice constructing your own sentences with them.

Subjunctive II (Konjunktiv II) for polite requests, passive voice, relative clauses, two-way prepositions (Wechselpräpositionen), indirect speech.
